How to Cope with Anger and Manage Emotions

Expressing ourselves calmly and peacefully is not always easy. Learning how to cope with anger will improve the quality of our lives.

cope with anger

Mixed feelings and inability to manage emotions can cause some people to express themselves with anger and distress. How we cope with anger can strongly affect relationships at work, and with family and friends.

Learning How to Cope with Anger

Paula* was often angry with her husband because she felt guilty about expressing her true feelings and emotions on various topics. Trapped in this loop of guilt and anxiety, she tended to speak in an angry manner. She came to InnerOptimal to find help for how to cope with anger and solve her issue.

As Paula’s brain training progressed, her brain was able to restore a better, healthier balance between the reptilian, limbic and neocortical parts of the brain. At the end of her training, she was able to manage her conflict and anger issues, leading to a better relationship with her husband, and restoring peaceful and calm discussions at home.

Anger and the Brain

The brain is made of three main parts: the reptilian brain, the limbic system and the neocortical brain. A healthy brain will use all parts with appropriate balance. The reptilian brain is the part that will fight for our survival. This brain can be predominant when the person suffers from trauma that causes stress, anxiety or anger for example. The neocortical brain has a much better ability to handle stressful events and will help stay calm, remain open to change, and maintain a long-term view of situations. The limbic system will support either of the two other brains depending which one is predominant.

Real Life Results

In the case of people such as Paula, showing characteristics of hypersensitivity to social criticism due to traumatic events, their reptilian brain, supported by the limbic system is predominant. As a result, mostly they will view every situation as negative, with a half-empty glass perspective. They will react negatively to criticism or suggestions. They have the tendency to imagine negative criticism from others even when it is not there. When this behavioral issue is not addressed, the problem will remain, as the brain is kept trapped in a downward loop. Learning how to cope with anger will stop this downward trend.

We Can Help

InnerOptimal is capable of solving this type of issue with a fast method that has long-lasting effects. Clients are able to restore positive and objective thinking that is considered difficult, if not impossible to establish, when the problem is not efficiently addressed.

Exercise of the month:

This exercise can help you to restore calm after a stressful day and cope with anger. Just before bedtime, think about five positive things that happened during the day. Remembering positive events every day helps install positive thinking. This is a very powerful way to bring peace and calm. It also helps you get a good night’s sleep.
